European Code of Measure Edition 2008 by Martin Wright
Brief report from FIG Stockholm June 2008
The Presentation of the Code met with interest among the audience (about 30 + speakers) of the Commission 10 session (Construction Economics and Management).
Questions asked:
- is the Code officially recognised
- is the code not something the EU are doing (or should be doing)
- do the EU officials know that the code exists
- does the code cover costs in use (of course it does)
A representative from Ghana was delighted to find an instrument for ‘real cost planning’.
It was also noted that differing national codes could have in the past led to wrong decisions being made, that the use of the code should highlight the differences and prevent this happening in the future. This should be stressed in making a presentation to the EU Commission. Construction Economics is only applicable to a small group within FIG.
FIG Commission 10 (Chairman Andrew Morley) is a mixture of Project Management (working group10.1) and Construction Economics (working group 10.3), with a strong Quantity Surveying influence (building and civil engineering), but moving the emphasis and perception to wider management issues. The morning session was an open forum on Project Management excellently chaired by Richard Huckler on the basis of a first class presentation on PM. It was much stressed, that PM did not only apply to construction projects, but could be used for a much wider area of activities.
